Can Chickens Eat Bananas? Yes, and They'll Love You for It

Yes! Chickens can eat bananas, and most of them think bananas are a party. Just serve them as an occasional treat, not a main meal.

Toss a banana into the run and watch the chase. One hen grabs a chunk, three others chase her, and somebody always ends up with banana on her beak.

How Much Is Okay?

Bananas are sweet, so a little goes a long way. Keep all treats together to no more than about a tenth of the day's food. The rest should be their regular balanced feed.

For a small flock, one banana split among the girls a couple of times a week is plenty.

What About the Peel?

Banana peels aren't toxic, but they're tough and can be hard to digest. Peeling is the simplest choice. If you share a little peel, wash it and chop it into very small pieces.

How to Serve Bananas

  • Sliced: Cut into coins so everyone gets a turn.

  • Mashed: Great for older hens or a little mixed into a treat bowl.

  • Frozen: On a hot summer day, frozen banana chunks make a cool snack.

  • Hung up: Hang a half banana in the run for a fun peck-and-play game.

Always skip moldy or rotten fruit.

Why Not Give More?

Too many treats can fill hens up so they skip their feed. Layer feed has the balance of protein and calcium they need to lay strong eggs. Bananas are dessert, not dinner.

Other Fruit Favorites

Chickens also enjoy berries, watermelon, apples (no seeds), and melon. Keep portions small and fresh, and remove leftovers before they spoil.

Can Chicks Eat Bananas?

Growing chicks do best on a balanced starter feed. For young chicks, stick with their starter rather than banana treats.
