How Big Should a Chicken Coop Be? A Simple Space Guide

Give each standard-size chicken at least 3 to 4 square feet inside the coop, as long as they also get a run to stretch their legs. If your birds will be shut inside most of the time, they need much more room, closer to 8 to 10 square feet each.

Think of the coop as the bedroom and the run as the backyard. Chickens mostly sleep and lay eggs inside. They do their living outside.

Quick Math for Your Flock

Got four hens? A coop of about 16 square feet, like 4 feet by 4 feet, is a good start. Six hens? Aim for around 24 square feet.

For the run, many keepers like about 10 square feet per bird. More is always better. Bored, crowded chickens get cranky and start picking on each other.

Size Depends on the Bird

Bantams, the tiny chickens, can get by with less room. Big breeds like Brahmas and Orpingtons need more. If your flock is a mix, plan for the biggest birds.

Don't Forget the Furniture

Roosts: Chickens sleep perched up off the floor. Give each bird about 8 to 10 inches of roost bar. A flat 2-by-4 with the wide side up is comfy for their feet.

Nest boxes: One box for every four hens is plenty. Hens love to share, and they often all want the same box anyway.

Fresh air: Good airflow up high keeps the coop dry and stops that strong ammonia smell. Vents near the roof let moisture out without blowing a draft on sleeping birds.

The Golden Rule: Build Bigger

Here's the secret every chicken keeper learns. Chicken math is real. Once you have a few hens, you'll want a few more. Building a little bigger now saves you from building again next spring.
