Can You Hatch Store-Bought Eggs? The Honest (and Fun) Answer

Usually not. Most grocery store eggs come from hens that live without roosters, so the eggs aren't fertile. No matter how cozy your incubator is, an unfertilized egg cannot grow into a chick.

It's a popular kitchen experiment, though, and we get the appeal. Who wouldn't want a surprise chick from a carton of large browns?

Why Most Grocery Eggs Won't Hatch

No rooster, no chick. A hen lays eggs all on her own, but only a rooster can make them fertile. Most commercial table-egg flocks keep hens without roosters.

The fridge. Even if an egg were fertile, cold storage is hard on a tiny embryo. Hatching eggs are kept cool, not cold.

Washing and age. Commercial store eggs in the United States are washed and may be a few weeks old by the time you buy them. Hatching eggs do best when they're fresh.

What About Farm-Stand Eggs?

Eggs from a local farm or farmers market are a little different. If the farmer keeps a rooster with the hens, some eggs might be fertile. But if they've been in a fridge, the odds of a hatch drop way down.

If you're curious, ask the farmer two questions: "Do you have a rooster?" and "Were these refrigerated?"

Is It Safe to Eat a Fertile Egg?

Fertility alone does not make an egg unsafe to eat. Like other eggs, fertile eggs need proper handling, prompt refrigeration, and thorough cooking. They do not develop while kept properly refrigerated.

The Easy Way to Get Chicks

If you want to watch chicks hatch, start with true hatching eggs. Breeders collect them fresh from flocks with roosters and handle them for hatching. Even with fertile eggs, a hatch is never guaranteed.

Bonus: you get to pick the breed. Blue eggs, fluffy Silkies, big gentle Orpingtons. It's way more fun than a grocery store mystery.

Find fresh hatching eggs from breeders at Hatching Egg Directory, then learn to hatch them with confidence at Incubation Masterclass.
